NRHA Save Rural Hospitals Action Center

· In the News ·

Since 2010, seventy-nine rural hospitals have closed. In fact, the rate of closure has steadily increased since sequesters and bad debt cuts began to hit rural hospitals. According to the NRHA, the rate of closures is five times higher in 2016 compared to 2010. Right now, 673 additional facilities are vulnerable and could close, representing more than one-third of rural hospitals in the U.S. If these vulnerable facilities close, it is estimated 11.7 million people will lose access to direct care.

To see how you can prevent these closures from happening, please visit NRHA Save Rural Hospitals Action Center

Having Back Pain? Try These Tips!

· In the News ·

Are you one of many who suffers from back problems? Is it causing you to lose sleep at night? If so, try these simple stretches to help alleviate your back pain.

1) Rocking Twist: Bring knees near to your chest while lying on your back. Gently pull them towards and away from you by rocking knees back and forth.

2) Leg Twist: Lie flat on your back. Bring your arms to sides and your left knee and place your left foot on the right knee. Drop this knee over to the opposite side by twisting your spine and lower back while your shoulders lie flat on the floor.

3) Hamstring Stretch: While sitting stretch out your legs and then bend one leg out of the way. Now, rotate the stretched leg inwards. Lean forward so you can feel a stretch under your thighs.

4) Back Extension: Place a rolled towel under your back. The towel should be directly under your belly button. Stretch out your legs straight and your arms in an upward direction. Your feet should be as wide as your shoulders. Hold this position for 5 minutes.

Back Towel

Try these stretches out for a few weeks. If you are still having troubles, remember you have options! Call 720-432-4419 to find the nearest specialty physician in your rural community.

Are Rural Hospitals Operating at Negative Margins?

· In the News ·

According to a recent study conducted by Chartis Group and iVantage Health Analytics, approximately 41% of rural hospitals operated with negative margins in 2016. It was added, a large portion of rural hospitals are facing negative operating margins due to revenue cycle challenges. Some of these challenges include the higher rate of uninsured patients, lower claims reimbursement rates, patients seeking care outside of rural setting due to increased rates, lower employment rates, shortage of primary care providers and tighter payer-negotiated rates. To find out more about this study, please visit 41% of Rural Hospitals Operating with Negative Margins.

If you are apart of a rural hospital and want to speak about how RPM can help, please call at 720-432-4419.

Operation Smile with Dr. Ydens

In early May, Larry Ydens, M.D. volunteered with Operation Smile and took a mission trip to Grozny, Chechnya, Russia. This mission trip was considered a “local mission”, meaning it was staffed primarily by the Russian volunteers. In addition to these volunteers, Larry’s group included two international volunteers, a reconstructive surgeon from the UK and himself, an anesthesiologist residing in Colorado. As a team, they screened 80 children for surgery, ran 3 operating rooms for 4 days, and did a total of 60 surgeries. During his visit, Larry also had the chance to watch the celebration and fireworks of Freedom Day (end of WW2). After the mission, Larry traveled to the Caucuses mountains close to the border. Here he celebrated at the family home of one of the volunteers, and a world renowned maxillofacial surgeon, author, and former world Sambo (judo) champion.

This was Larry’s 15th mission trip with Operation Smile. He has truly dedicated the last 5+ years of his career to doing 4 missions a year with Operation Smile.
