According to a recent article published by 3 News Now, 29 of 71 rural hospitals in Nebraska are operating in the red due to several factors, declining populations, federal sequestration, and changes to medicaid/medicare under the Affordable Care Act. This puts many rural hospitals in danger of staying afloat, including Dundy County Hospital (DCH) in Benkelman, NE. However, DCH isn’t allowing their struggles to prevent them from operating. Thanks to local donations and support from the county, the hospital will continue to operate and plan a $3.8 million expansion project. Since the nearest hospital is 38 miles aware, this is great news for the residents around Benkelman.
